The College of Charleston Summer Undergraduate Research with Faculty (SURF) projects culminate with a poster session on August 24. This year, 38 student/faculty teams were awarded SURF grants for their summer research and these teams represented dozens of departments on campus from biology to historic preservation.

The maximum award for a single SURF grant is $5,000 and it is expected that the student will work the equivalent of 40 hours a week for 10 weeks. In addition to participating in the college-wide poster session, they are also required to submit a written project summary for public dissemination and are strongly encouraged to submit results to regional, national and international publications and conferences.

“Opportunities for undergraduate research is what helps to set the College of Charleston apart from other institutions,” said Trisha Folds-Bennett, Director of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities. “SURF grants provide faculty-student collaboration that is one of the most enriching and rewarding experiences on an undergraduate campus. It is so important, it is becoming one of the standards of excellence by which nationally pre-eminent undergraduate institutions are measured.”
