The College of Charleston is in full swing for the 2009-2010 academic year with more than 3,000 new students who have traveled as far as 9,977 miles to be here. There are more than 30 full-time faculty members, many of whom will be teaching classes that are brand new to the College.

Here is a look at some of the changes you’ll see for fall 2009:

The College launched a redesigned website, www.cofc.edu, that offers improved functionality, content and navigation. There are also many more interactive features and it gives users a better sense of the College’s thriving and historic community.

The Marion and Wayland Cato Center for the Arts, at the corner of Calhoun and St. Philip Streets, will be opened in early October with move-in scheduled for December and classes beginning in January. The first major event in the building will be on October 23 with the opening of an exhibition by the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art.

will be completed in November.  Faculty and staff will move in during December and classes will begin there in January.

A new Global Scholars program will allow all faculty and students to earn a Global Scholar designation after satisfying a few requirements. This is a step toward globalization of the College and its community. For more information go to www.cofc.edu/~globalscholars

Family Weekend will have a new twist for 2009 with the culmination of the College Reads. Author Tim O’Brien will be on campus to discuss his book, The Things They Carried, which all entering freshmen read.

It will now be easier for students, faculty, staff and the community to interact with the College in the areas of finance, admissions and human resources. The College’s Sustainability Committee has implemented a new program called “Eco-Rep” that designates one volunteer from each academic and administrative department to serve as recycling representatives for their respective areas. This is part of President Benson’s pledge to the American
College & University Presidents Climate Commitment.

The Center for the Documentary will now offer a Multimedia Workshop series every Tuesday from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. in the Education Center in Room 210.  Multimedia Workshops are open to the entire College of Charleston, from novice to expert.”

The School of Education, Health, and Human Performance has launched a new M. Ed. in Teaching, Learning and Advocacy. The School has also started a new 3 and 4-year-class at Memminger Elementary School that is a partnership with the College’s Early Childhood Development Center.

The Department of Computer Science has added a new minor in computational thinking, an updated minor in computer science and created a graduate certificate in service oriented computing. Also, computer science majors can now study in La Rochelle, France for one semester with no tuition charges at the host university.  The agreement with the University of La Rochelle is the third
destination for computer science majors in Europe.
