Six College of Charleston students received scholarships from the Gavalas Kolanko Foundation (GKF). The scholarships are awarded to students at the College of Charleston who have physical limitations that make college additionally challenging.

The six scholarship recipients are Senior Rachel Beahm, a sociology major; Freshman Andrew Holloway; Senior Alex Jackson, a communication major; Junior Daniel Klein, a classics major; Junior Alan Sea, a Spanish major; and Senior Ryan Watkins, a political science major.  Five of the six recipients have been awarded a scholarship the last three years.  The scholarship can be renewed up to four years.  Since its inception, the GKF has awarded an impressive 37 scholarships to special needs students at the College of Charleston.

The GKF is a public charity established to help students with disabilities reach their secondary educational goals.  By awarding scholarship assistance to College of Charleston students each year, the GKF helps make “Education Within Reach” for South Carolina undergraduates pursuing a college education despite physical limitations.  To qualify, a student must be hearing, sight, or physically impaired.

Nicholas B. Gavalas and Dr. Ronald Kolanko established the GKF in 1999 after becoming aware of the costly requirements for students with disabilities wishing to attend college.
