The College of Charleston’s Department of Hispanic Studies is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 through October 12) with a wide range of activities. On September 24, you can catch “noche de cine” (movie night) featuring dinner and a movie at 6:00 p.m. in the Stern Center. Tertulias, informal gatherings to practice conversational Spanish, will be held on September 25, October 9 and October 23 from 5:00-6:30 p.m. at Yo Burrito on Wentworth Street. Aramark has also provided Hispanic foods in all of the dining facilities on campus for the week of September 21.

The Spanish House, located at 8 Bull Street, is the first themed house in the history of the College of Charleston. Residents speak only Spanish while at the house. They will be hosting an event on October 1 to explain the Cuba study abroad program. They will also be volunteering at the Charleston County Parks’ Latin American Festival on October 4 at Wannamaker County Park.

The Department of Hispanic Studies has been celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month for the past five years. Activities vary each year, but have included Hispanic Fairs, guest speakers, film festivals, parties at the Spanish House and special tertulias.

“Hispanic Heritage Month is so important for our students and community, especially as we strive to provide a global education,” said Joe Weyers, chair of the Department of Hispanic Studies. “Hispanics are not just immigrants to our country, a large part of the United States was once part of Spanish territory and parts of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Montana and California are still strongly Hispanic today.”
