The College of Charleston’s Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team is helping to launch an oyster shell recycling program for Charleston area restaurants. According to The Nature Conservancy, more than 3 million pounds of oysters sold in South Carolina each year are bought by restaurants and an $8,000 grant will start a pilot recycling program.

SIFE students will educate the business owners on King and Market Streets about the importance of recycling and the services offered in this pilot project.  In addition educating business owners about the shell recycling, they will also explain that Fisher Recycling will offer curbside pick up of cardboard, corks
and cooking oil.  The cardboard will be recycled into new corrugate, cooking oil into biodiesel fuel and the corks will be given to the Aquarium and sent off to make items to sell in their gift shop.

SIFE is a partnership between business and higher education that is preparing the next generation of entrepreneurs and business leaders to create a better world for everyone through six focus areas: market economics, success skills, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and environmental sustainability. This project fulfills the environmental sustainability component.
