College of Charleston professor Edward Hart’s original composition “Three Latin Rivers” will be played October 8 by the Charleston Symphony Orchestra as the opening to the Backstage Pass Series. The concert will begin at 7:00 p.m. at Memminger Auditorium. Tickets are $25 for general admission and $5 for students.

When Hart was on sabbatical in 2006, he went abroad, where he was inspired to write this piece. Watch this video, where he explains the music’s influences.

“It is always such a pleasure to have the Charleston Symphony perform my pieces; I believe this is the sixth time over the years,” explains Edward Hart, “My ‘Three Latin Rivers’ piece has a Tango and Fado
influence – the audience should find it very interesting.  And hopefully they will be able to imagine themselves in a tiny Fado club in Porto, Portugal, listening to a shawl-clad  woman passionately singing through the cigar smoke.”

In addition to Hart’s composition, the “Songs of our Youth” program features Liadov’s “Eight Russian Folk Songs” and Ravel’s “Le Tombeau de Couperin”.

“The Backstage Pass Series performances will be intimate experiences for the audience.  Backstage Pass performances will have an exciting energy and informality at Memminger.  We have pieces by living composers in each performance so sometimes the composer will be there to talk about their pieces or I’ll speak from the stage,” Maestro David Stahl explains.

Tickets are on sale at www.charlestonsymphony.com, at the door the evening of the performance, the Gaillard Auditorium Box Office (77 Calhoun Street, Charleston, SC) or any Ticketmaster outlet.
