The public will have an opportunity to check out the new Marion and Wayland H. Cato Jr. Center for the Arts at the College of Charleston on January 9, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. All five floors of the new 70,000-square-foot, $27.2 million building will be open, and there will be entertainment and refreshments on each floor. Aldwyth, the artist whose work is on exhibit in the Halsey Institute, will give a lecture at 2:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Simons Center.

If you don’t want to wait until January 9, here’s a sneak peek of the first floor! Each floor will be revealed in a video leading up to the open house.

The Halsey Institute for Contemporary Arts (now open) and the Hill Student Art Gallery are on the first floor. The Department of Music and a rehearsal/performance space for music ensembles will occupy the second floor. The Department of Theatre, complete with a movement and dance studio, will be on the third floor, and part of the Department of Studio Art will be housed on the fourth and fifth floors. In addition, there are painting studios for faculty and students on the fourth floor, and two state-of-the-art darkrooms for photography on the fifth.

Over the years, the School of the Arts has grown consistently. When the School was created in 1989, its faculty served 164 majors; in fall 2009 there were more than 700. This increase indicates how successful the School of the Arts continues to be in attracting talented and skilled faculty, students and staff who are creative and performing artists, art scholars and arts managers.
