College of Charleston students analyzed real-world issues for their final project in Prof. Norman Levine’s Geographical Information Systems (GIS) class. Watch a video.

One group of students analyzed CARTA bus routes and determined whether or not the information publicized on the CARTA website and in their brochures is accurate (turns out it isn’t). Another group of students looked at the availability of emergency health care access to residents of Charleston County. They found that approximately 90% of county residents live within 15 minutes of some type of emergency health care facility. The students created a list of hospitals, emergency rooms and urgent-care facilities, their addresses, phone numbers, hours of operation and websites. Also, Charleston County now has a GIS system in place that will show how long it might take county residents to get to their nearest emergency health care facility.

Student groups analyzed nearly a dozen different aspects of Lowcountry life.
