The College of Charleston’s School of Business (SB) names Jocelyn Evans, Ph.D., as chair of its Department of Economics and Finance.  The appointment was made by Dr. Alan Shao, dean of the School.

“Dr. Evans has extensive research, committee leadership experience and commitment that makes her ideal for the chair position,” says Dr. Shao.  “She cares deeply about student performance and spends hours outside of the classroom to help students succeed.  The students really appreciate her and I look forward to working with her.”

Dr. Evans joined the College of Charleston in 2005 and progressed through a series of teaching, advising and prominent committee chair roles. She earned her doctorate in finance at the University of South Carolina and an MBA in finance from Washington University in St. Louis, MO.  She graduated from Barat College in Lake Forrest, IL with a bachelor’s degree in business.

Professional Highlights

In addition to her SB responsibilities, Dr. Evans is involved with several external programs and community service.

She is a faculty advisor for the KPMG minority Ph.D. program that mentors doctoral students at different universities and coordinates a conference program at the Western Finance Association.

Since 2007, Dr. Evans has served as a visiting researcher at the Federal Reserve Bank in Atlanta.  Her research interests include banking, corporate governance, financial distress and compensation.

The SB recognized her with the Distinguished Research Award in 2008.

Personal Rewards

As a mother, Dr. Evans enjoys seeing her two children flourish in their academic and professional careers.  Her son, Timothy, played Division I soccer and graduated from Stanford University with a bachelor’s degree in economics.  He is currently working on his MBA at Washington University in St. Louis and will intern at Exxon Mobile this summer.  Her daughter, Megan, is a CPA and tax accountant at Ernst & Young.  She earned her Master of Accountancy at Wake Forest and was a Division I scholar athlete at the University of Kentucky where she graduated with a bachelor’s in accounting.

Outside the classroom, Dr. Evans volunteers for the MLK Challenge sponsored by CofC.  The Challenge is part of a week-long celebration of MLK and consists of student teams who go out into the Charleston community to complete 15 service projects in six hours.  She is also active in her faith community at Seacoast Church.
