Ever wonder why they’re called “grand openings?” Find out on April 15, at the new Barnes & Noble at College of Charleston.  The bookstore, which opened for business in February of this year, is hosting its grand opening celebration on that Thursday and the event is packed with a little something for everyone.

The festivities kick off with two faculty author showcases featuring Bret Lott and Michelle VanParys, at 11:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. respectively.  In addition, local author Margaret Middleton Rivers Eastman will be on-hand beginning at 12:00 p.m. to sign copies of her book, The Hidden History of Old Charleston.  Also beginning at 12:00, and until 2:00 p.m., visitors can enjoy free popcorn as well as cupcakes from Cupcake (a local business), and can even have portraits drawn by a sketch artist.

The celebration continues with Student Appreciation Hour beginning at 2:00 p.m. This hour features special gifts and promotions tailored just for students, as well as an appearance by the College of Charleston Cheerleaders and Clyde the Cougar.

Beginning at 3:00 p.m., all College of Charleston faculty members are invited for a coffee break during which they can visit with the bookstore team and review their summer and fall book orders.

The event concludes with a community family event from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., featuring live storytelling, crafts, and a special appearance by favorite children’s book characters Fancy Nancy and Biscuit the Dog.
