A College of Charleston freshman was featured on a national television show thanks to his enthusiasm for his First-Year Experience Learning Community. Sam Gifford was assigned a project on securities for his “Business, Technology, and Innovation” Learning Community. As he learned more, he started watching CNBC’s “Mad Money.”

“I watched ‘Mad Money’ almost every day to learn more about the current market environment,” Gifford, a freshman, says. “I wanted to be on the ‘Lightning Round,’ which is the segment in the show where viewers call to ask about a specific stock. I thought it was a great experience to be on a show I watched regularly.”

The Learning Community is for freshmen, and combines MGMT 105 – Introduction to Business and CSCI 110 – Computer Fluency. This learning community focuses on the ideas of business innovation through emerging and changing technology and includes a survey of the activities that occur in a business institution. Students learned about disruptive technologies and how to use and leverage Web 3.0 collaborative technologies in their personal, academic, and professional networks.

“I was so pleased with the level of student engagement,” says Lancie Affonso, course instructor in computer and decision sciences. “Not just Sam’s engagement, but the entire class. As a result of this Learning Community, several students plan to major in either computer science or business and many are returning as peer facilitators.”

Gifford says, “I am still interested in investing in securities and I will be working in New York this summer in this field to learn more.”
