More than 200 students from all majors are registered to represent 61 countries in the sixth annual College of Charleston Model United Nations Conference to be held from 3:45 – 8:00 p.m. on Friday, April 15 and 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Saturday, April 16 at the Carolina First Arena. Watch video of last year’s event.

The students are trained in the rules governing debate in the U.N. before debating the merits of three resolutions up for a vote. This year, we will be focusing on internet freedom and net neutrality, bodily integrity, and environmental protections. In the final plenary session on Saturday afternoon, delegations will pass or defeat new versions of the three resolutions under consideration. The purpose of the conference is to provide an “experiential learning” opportunity that will engage students in a dialogue about global issues and how real world leaders conduct international diplomacy.

“The simulation provides an opportunity to view the world from a different perspective and serves as a valuable experience in learning how to utilize Robert’s Rules of Order”, says Nicol Spann, political science major who has been training fellow students on Model UN procedures and their roles.

The Model United Nations is sponsored by the School of Languages, Cultures, and World Affairs; the School of Humanities and Social Sciences; the Division of Academic Affairs; and the Office of Institutional Diversity.
