The College of Charleston baseball team was selected to compete in the 66th annual NCAA Division I Baseball Championship, the tournament selection committee announced on Monday afternoon.

College of Charleston (37-20) will travel to the Gainesville, Fla., regional as the three seed, facing second-seeded Georgia Tech (36-24) on Friday, June 1 on ESPN3. The Yellow Jackets won the ACC Tournament on Sunday with an 8-5 win over Miami.

The regional host, Florida (42-18), was selected as the overall number one seed in the tournament. The four seed in the regional is Bethune-Cookman (34-25).

“We’re excited and grateful for the opportunity to play in the postseason,” head coach Monte Lee said. “We’re looking forward to playing against a great opponent like Georgia Tech, and playing in a regional with one of the top teams in the country in Florida.”

Finishing the season as SoCon Regular Season Co-Champions, the Cougars posted a record of 37-20 with wins over postseason participants South Carolina, Clemson, Coastal Carolina, Appalachian State and Samford.

This season marks the fifth NCAA postseason appearance for the Cougars since 2004, and the first since College of Charleston advanced to the finals of the Coastal Carolina regional in 2010. This year’s regular season title was the fourth in the last decade and first since 2007 for the Cougars.

Along with College of Charleston, the selection committee tabbed Appalachian State as an at-large selection along with SoCon tournament champion Samford, giving the conference three teams in the tournament for just the second time in the league’s history. In 2010, tournament champion The Citadel along with Elon and College of Charleston all advanced to give the SoCon three teams.

College of Charleston has been led by SoCon Player of the Year Marty Gantt who posted an average of .375 with a team-best 44 RBI and 10 home runs. Outfielder Brandon Murray led the team with 12 homers and an average of .324 after going on a tear in the last seven games, hitting .529 with 10 RBI. The Cougars totaled 63 home runs on the season which ranked in the top 10 in the country.

The team’s ERA of 3.21 led the Southern Conference as team ace Christian Powell posted a league-best ERA of 2.39 and earned SoCon Pitcher of the Year honors.
