Convocation at the College of Charleston brings the entire community together to show new students how their liberal arts education can come full circle. On Monday, August 20, 2012 more than 40 successful alumni from the Charleston area will return to campus to partner with faculty for engaging discussions with students. They’ll reflect on the value of their education in their life and careers, which include environmental scientist, business owner, dentist, realtor, attorney, and even an executive chef.

New students will be welcomed into the liberal arts and sciences community with a highly engaging and interactive small-group discussion with a faculty member and alumnus. They will meet from 10:00 until 10:45 in unique locations across campus. Some groups will be in traditional classrooms, others will be on the Sottile Theatre stage, on the exercise deck of the Johnson Center, and even in the President’s House.

Following these small group meetings, faculty dressed in academic regalia will lead the students through the arch at Porter’s Lodge under the inscription “Know Thyself” where they will meet with President George Benson and Provost George Hynd in the Cistern Yard. They will then have the opportunity to officially sign “the book,” signifying their formal entrance to the College of Charleston community.

This occasion also serves to familiarize incoming students with the College’s academic traditions as well as the institution’s history, symbols and mottos. The College’s convocation welcomes new students to the liberal arts and sciences community and encourages them to consider their own intellectual journey.
