Dozens of College of Charleston premed students will participate in the Beach Sweep/River Sweep on September 15, 2012. Students in the Chemistry and Biology for Premed Students First Year Experience Learning Community will get to know the Charleston region while serving the community in a way that relates to their academic interests.
The students will meet on campus and walk together to Waterfront Park in downtown Charleston where they will clean the marsh areas from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. The cleanup is organized by the S.C. Sea Grant Consortium and S.C. Department of Natural Resources and has been held annually since 1998.
“Students in this learning community have been participating in the Beach Sweep/River Sweep for the past few years and it has been a great experience,” says Chemistry Professor Wendy Cory. “By walking to Waterfront Park, they are able to see a lot of Charleston and familiarize themselves with their new city. Plus, there’s just something about climbing through the mud and marsh that brings people together!”
The Chemistry and Biology for Premed Students Learning Community is tailored to incoming freshmen with a strong desire to pursue a career in medicine or in biomedical research. The fields of chemistry and biology are increasingly intertwined and these two introductory classes demonstrate the natural connections in the fields. Students who have participated in this Learning Community are proven to be more prepared for upper level courses like Organic Chemistry. The course is taught by Cory, Biochemistry Professor Pam Gelasco, and Biology Faculty Member Kathleen Janech.
