Charleston’s greatest creative minds will come together in the College of Charleston’s Cistern Yard on October 9, 2012 for Pecha Kucha 15 (PK15). Tickets for this event sold out within 30 minutes of going on sale, which even surprised organizers since more tickets were available. The gates open at 6 p.m. and the event starts at 7 p.m. Watch a video.
Pecha Kucha is a mix of show-and-tell and open-mike night that has become a forum for ideas on design, architecture and other forms of creativity. Each presenter is allowed 20 images, each shown for just 20 seconds, giving 6 minutes 40 seconds of fame before the next presenter is up. This keeps presentations concise, the interest level up, and gives more people the chance to show.
Parliament, the group who organizes Charleston’s Pecha Kuchas, specifically chose the Cistern Yard for this event (beyond the fact that it is a beautiful outdoor space).
“At the College of Charleston, the recent addition of the BA degree program, Computing in the Arts, is the outcome of a vision to merge the fine arts with computation. The computer science department is engaged through Parliament to make Charleston a better place for creative people to thrive. Providing a talent pipeline of software and design creatives and doubling the output of that pipeline is planned and will be a major contribution to the development in a shared vision for Silicon Harbor.”

The presenters for PK15 include one of the College’s own staff members, Dave Brown, multimedia artist and animator in the Division of Marketing and Communications. In college, Brown discovered a passion for documentary filmmaking. After several years creating documentaries he branched into graphics for video and eventually into computer animation. Now he is the mastermind behind many of the videos used by the College of Charleston and featured on the YouTube channel.
Other presenters include Paul Roof (Holy City Beard & Moustache Society), Nate Justiss, Lindsay Windham & Adam Printz (Distil Union), Heather Koonse (The Rose Knot), Buff Ross (Alloneword Design), Margaret Pilarski & Susan Cohen (Southeast Zine Fest), David Pastre (Clemson Architecture program/manager/teacher), and Marc Collins (Executive Chef, Circa 1886). Sully Sullivan (photographer) will be the evening emcee.
