The Charleston region is truly a classroom for College of Charleston students. On October 11, 2012, students in a course on suburbia will be joined by North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey as they tour the Park Circle neighborhood. The bus will arrive at the Park Circle Community Center around 9:30 a.m.

Park Circle was designed to be a “Garden City,” which combines the best of both town and country. The center of a Garden City is always a circle, and it is usually a space for community activities. Mayor Summey will talk about his plans for the development of North Charleston and Park Circle and how it plays into the larger discussion of suburbia.

“Suburbs are the most common residential area,” explains Kevin Keenan, political science professor. “In this course we look at the people, places and politics of suburbs and debate the forces driving suburbanization in America. This tour is an excellent opportunity for concepts to come to life for students.”
