Each spring, current College of Charleston students are eligible to submit their recent work to the Young Contemporaries, offering an opportunity to have their work chosen by a nationally prominent juror and exhibit in a professional gallery setting. Young Contemporaries 2013 will be on view in the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art from April 5 through May 4, 2013, with an opening reception on April 5 from 5 to 7 p.m. This  annual exhibition, which is free and open to the public, shows off the brightest talents coming out of the College’s School of the Arts. For the 2013 Young Contemporaries exhibition, visiting artist and curator Scott Stulen selected 79 student works for display. Local artist Hirona Matsuda will select 17 works to receive awards. A total of 616 submissions were received for the 2013 Young Contemporaries exhibition, including 231 paintings, 117 drawings, 12 mixed media, 62 prints, 142 photographs, 6 videos, and 46 sculptures.

Concurrent with Young Contemporaries 2013 is the Salon des Refusés exhibition, showing in the Hill Exhibition Gallery within the Marion and Wayland H. Cato Jr. Ctr. for the Arts. The origin of the “Salon des Refusés” dates to Paris in 1863, when artists who had been rejected from the official Salon caused such a protest that Emperor Napoleon III ordered another exhibition held for them. Among the painters in this “Salon des Refusés” were Camille Pissaro, Henri Fantin-Latour, James M. Whistler, and Edouard Manet.

Scott Stulen is an artist, dj, curator and programmer. He is the Project Director of mnartists.org, an online art hub serving over 20,000 Midwest artists, Director of the McKnight Artist Fellowship for Photographers and former Associate Curator at the Rochester Art Center (MN). He received his BFA in Sculpture from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in 1998 and his MFA in Painting and Drawing with a minor in Art History from the University of Minnesota in 2004.
