The College of Charleston will host delegations from the University of Tartu (Estonia), the Estonian Embassy in Washington, D.C., and Nebraska Wesleyan University on April 21-24, 2013. The goal is to explore opportunities for cooperation between the three universities, as well as engage business, political and education leaders in a discussion of joint ventures between local and regional companies and the country of Estonia.

“University of Tartu is one of the oldest universities in Europe (founded in 1632) and is recognized as ‘Estonia’s national university,” says Andrew Sobiesuo, associate provost for international education at the College of Charleston. “The University is a leader in research and has a strong reputation for international cooperation. This partnership is an opportunity to provide an academic experience for students in one of the most progressive economies in Europe.”

The Ambassador of the Country of Estonia, Marina Kaljurand will attend a welcome reception on campus where the partnership agreement will be signed by Volli Kalm, Rector of the University of Tartu and College of Charleston President George Benson. The partnership is expected to begin in fall 2013.

The Harry and Reba Huge Foundation supports this partnership and has funded international travel scholarships for College of Charleston students. The Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit providing scholarships and opportunities for student scholars with the drive and potential to be leaders. Harry Huge, a resident of Charleston, serves as the Honorary Consul of Estonia.
