The Schottland Scholars are widely known as the most elite group of business students at the College of Charleston. The recently selected Class of 2014 is being called the most competitive to date.
“We had twice as many applicants as in the past, and their credentials blew us away,” says Carrie Blair Messal, Ph.D., director of the program and assistant professor of management. “Among those selected, the average overall GPA is 3.6. Even more impressive is their involvement in College activities and community service. Three of the Scholars selected are currently studying abroad; three are either currently playing or have played competitive sports while in college; most are actively involved in community service; and one is the founder of a community service organization on campus.”

The program fosters the professional development of highly motivated students by providing them with challenging, extracurricular opportunities in the business community. The mission of the program is for the scholars to develop skills to become outstanding in the areas of ethical awareness, global awareness, problem solving, and effective communication so that they will succeed in becoming future business leaders.
Carrie Blair Messal has served as the program’s director and academic advisor since the inception of the Schottland Scholars five years ago. The quality of the program continues to improve under Messal’s leadership with the support of Bill Finn, chairman of Asten Johnson and member of the School of Business Board of Governors.
The Schottland Scholars program is an invaluable professional training ground for young business professionals. It is made possible by the generous support and guidance of Peter and Susan Schottland, and continues a family tradition of support for the College of Charleston. In 1993, Peter’s father, Stan Schottland, started the Schottland Leadership Award. Peter is a member of the School of Business Board of Governors.
