College of Charleston senior business student Darren Boulton packed as much as he could into the past two years, and it is paying off. Boulton was just given the Schottland Business Leadership Award. He will receive $5,000 at graduation, as well as employment assistance, and $10,000 toward an M.B.A.

Boulton transferred to the College as a junior. A dedicated entrepreneur, he volunteers with YEScarolina, is a Schottland Scholar, won the Rady Venture Open National Business Plan Competition in San Diego, competed in three iGo Business Plan competitions (winning one), competed in the Taziki’s Marketing Challenge, played intramural basketball and football, and started a club, the College of Charleston Entrepreneur’s Organization (CofCEO).

“I wanted to make sure I took advantage of every minute of the past two years,” Boulton says. “Being a Schottland Scholar has hands down been the best experience in my life. Because of the Schottland Scholars I have met well over 50 high-level executives (local and national), visited more than 40 businesses, and have had a personal mentor to guide me through this year.”

In his “spare” time, Boulton has also launched a tech start-up, Preddictive. After graduation, he’ll be working on getting the website and online platform off the ground. Preddictive will allow users to make predictions about any topic from anywhere online. Users can make a prediction right from an article on the topic, say the Best Picture winner at the Academy Awards. Preddictive also allows users to share it on social media accounts, and then track it to prove that “you called it” down the road. Sports, politics, major events, or celebrity news are just a few of the topics that are perfect for Preddictive.

He’ll also be taking a course this summer to become a certified Entrepreneurship Teacher and then team-teaching at YEScarolina summer camps. Boulton will also be judging his first business plan competitions and helping YEScarolina staff create a new mentorship program.

Boulton says, “Thanks to the Schottland Leadership Award, graduate school has become an option for me since it will relieve a heavy financial burden off my shoulders. Ideally I would love to do the one year global MBA program here at the College. I would love the opportunity to study abroad through this program.”

The Schottland Leadership Award was first given in 1993, funded by Stan Schottland. It is given annually to a School of Business graduating senior, and both Peter and Stanley Schottland are on the School of Business Board of Governors.
