College of Charleston’s Juan Maegli (Guatemala City, Guatemala) was named College Sailor of the Year and awarded the Everett B. Morris Trophy at the Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) banquet held at the conclusion of the 2013 College Sailing Spring National Championships in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Maegli is only the fourth all-time College of Charleston sailor to receive the prestigious award next to Tyler W. Moore in 1994 and Athletics Hall of Famers Christopher B. Larson in 1988 and Willis A. “Andy” Lovell in 1991. Already a two-time college sailing national champion winning the ICSA Singlehanded Championship titles in 2009 and 2012, Maegli also earned ICSA All-American skipper honors for the second time of his career.

A two-time Olympian in the Laser Class event representing his home country of Guatemala, Maegli was given the honor of being the national team’s flag bearer during the Parade of Nations at the opening ceremonies for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London, England. He placed an Olympic career-best ninth overall in the medal race of the Laser Class in 2012 and will continue to train for another Olympic campaign in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Maegli, who made his Olympic debut at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China, will compete next at the ISAF Sailing World Cup Championships in Kiel, Germany, in June and the Laser North American Championships in Canada in late July.

Also earning ICSA All-American honors for the first time of their careers were sophomore crew Ali Blumenthal (Bellport, N.Y.) and senior crew Cory DeCollibus (Duxbury, Mass.). Senior Ben Spector (Santa Clarita, Calif.) was named an Honorable Mention All-American skipper.

In addition, Maegli, DeCollibus and freshman crew Seppie McAdams (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) were presented with the Allen Trophy, presented to the low-point winners of A-Division at the ICSA/Gill Coed National Championship regatta. The trio won their division by 41 points to lead the Cougars to victory in the event and secure their fourth all-time coed national title in program history.
