Andrew Sobiesuo, Ph.D., the College of Charleston’s associate provost for international education and professor of Hispanic studies, has been awarded a grant by the U.S.-UK Fulbright Commission to participate in the U.S.-UK International Education Administrators Seminar.  He will join a select group of top officials from leading U.S. and UK universities to discuss enhancing and advancing international education.  “As a representative of your country in the United Kingdom,” the award states, Sobiesuo “will help fulfill the principal purpose of the Fulbright Program, which is to increase mutual understanding between people of the United States and the people of the more than 150 countries that currently participate in the Fulbright Program.”

“It is an incredible honor to be given a Fulbright award, and to learn from educators in the UK, who have been at the forefront of education innovation in Europe,” Sobiesuo says. “The information I gain from our discussions will further the College’s strategic goal of expanding study abroad offerings to include more student exchanges, internships and research opportunities with UK universities.” At the College of Charleston, he continues, “we  challenge our students to learn how to shape their future and to prepare themselves for today’s world, and a study abroad experience is an integral part.”

In his role as chief international officer at the College of Charleston, Sobiesuo serves as the resource for all international students in addition to helping professors develop study abroad programs, and coordinating international student enrollment and recruitment. In 2010-11, the College was ranked no. 10 in overall study abroad among the top 40 Master’s Institutions in Open Doors 2012, a report prepared by the Institute of International Education (IIE).

The Fulbright Scholar Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and administered by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES).
