For the ninth consecutive year, the College of Charleston’s Department of Hispanic Studies commemorates Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 through October 15) with various activities. The Spanish Club will host tertulias, informal gatherings to practice conversational Spanish on September 27, 2013 and October 11, 2013 from 4:30-6:00 p.m. at Yo Burrito restaurant (77 Wentworth Street); movie nights; Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society will host a poetry recital in Spanish in October; students will participate in the Latin American Festival at Wannamaker County Park on October 6, 2013, among other activities.
“Recognizing Hispanic Heritage Month at the College of Charleston is really an extension of our continuous efforts to educate students and the community about the culture, history and language of the U.S.’s largest minority, which numbers one-sixth of our country’s residents,” said Dr. Mark P. Del Mastro, chair of the Department of Hispanic Studies. “Observing Hispanic Heritage Month helps sensitize us to this critically important, ever-growing sector of the U.S.”
