The College of Charleston Campus Recreation Services Department will open the new 15,000-square-foot George Street Fitness Center (GSFC), located on the first floor of the Campus Center Apartments (50 George St.), October 22 at 12 p.m. The community is invited to check out the facility during the opening ceremony, but the center will only be available to students.
President George Benson will begin the opening ceremony with a ribbon cutting at 12 p.m., followed by a grand tour of the facility at 12:15 p.m., a Sanity fitness class at 12:30 p.m. and a Zumba fitness class at 1:30 p.m. The grand opening will also offer free giveaways, food, prizes and fitness demonstrations.
The new fitness center is the largest on-campus facility in the College’s history. The facility will feature 45 pieces of cardio equipment, dumbbells ranging in weight from 5-100 pounds, more than 10,000 pounds of weight plates, 24 weight benches and power racks and 28 weight machines. Campus Recreation Services instructors will teach small-group fitness classes in the GSFC.
“The free weights are a really nice addition to our facility offerings,” Fitness Coordinator Bucky Buchanan said. “We anticipate those will bring in a lot of students. The state-of-the-art machines and high-energy classes combined with the free weights make it a one-stop shop.”
The GSFC will be open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 12 to 11 p.m. with classes scheduled several times a week.
