Students at the College of Charleston will learn what it means to be homeless and hungry through a series of events meant to spread awareness and collect resources for the homeless.

The Center for Civic Engagement will partner with Dining Services, the Cougar Activities Board, the Office of Sustainability, the Jewish Student Union/Hillel, and Charleston County Human Services to observe National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week from November 17-23, 2013.

Events highlighting housing accessibility and food security issues will include a viewing of the documentary A Place at the Table and a panel spotlighting hunger open to the College community. Experiential learning opportunities such as the Community Action Poverty Simulation and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Challenge as well as community service collaborations with Sweet Grass Gardens and the Habitat for Humanity ReStore will also be available to community members. Additionally the third annual Oxfam Hunger Banquet at the Jewish Student Union on November 20 at 6 p.m. The banquet is an interactive and empowering event, which simulates the world’s inequalities – allows participants to share a meal, discuss worldwide poverty, and learn more about local efforts to make a difference in the fight against hunger. Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to join us as we focus on raising awareness regarding the issue of hunger. Registration is required.

Canned goods will be collected at a number of locations on campus throughout the week and students will be encouraged to donate their dining dollars to benefit East Cooper Community Outreach. Donations will be collected at the men’s basketball game at TD Arena on November 23 at 6 p.m.
