In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 20, 2014, organizations at the College of Charleston are hosting or participating in the following activities and events. Students interested in participating in events still open for registration can email the contact listed alongside the event and learn more at the Martin Luther King Jr. Day website.

 

1. Speaker Jose Antonio Vargas

Vargas, a journalist, filmmaker and advocate for immigration reform, will discuss the human face of immigration and his experiences as an undocumented citizen. His speech is open to community members and will take place January 15, 2014 in the Stern Center Ballroom (71 George St.) at 7 p.m.


2. Alternative Break

The Center for Civic Engagement and the Martin Luther King Jr. Planning Committee are hosting an Alternative Break experience from January 17-20, 2014. Approximately 20 students will perform community service in Dr. King’s hometown of Atlanta, Ga. The initiative is a way for students to learn about and be inspired by Dr. King’s legacy of service and to share his dream with their communities.

The registration period for this experience is closed but students are encouraged to email Maggie Szeman at szemanme@cofc.edu for information on future Alternative Break experiences.


3. Bonner Leader Volunteer with Sea Island Habitat for Humanity

The Bonner Leader program will host 29 Bonner Leader students and 5 Bonner Leader alumni to volunteer in the groundbreaking of the Phase II portion of the Habitat for Humanity Laurel Oak Grove community on James Island. Participants will work with Sea Island Habitat for Humanity volunteers from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on January 20, 2014. Students interested in learning more about the Bonner Leaders program can review information on the Bonner Leader website.


4. Martin Luther King Jr. Peace March and Rally

The Martin Luther King Jr. Planning Committee is hosting the peace march and rally on January 22, 2014. The march and rally will feature Reverend Lisa Hawkins, John Bello Ogunu and the Charleston Development Academy’s Singing Eagles Concert Ensemble, as well as a screening of Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech.

Community members interested in joining can meet at Cougar Mall (outside of 175 Calhoun St.) at 5 p.m.
