When the Hootie & the Blowfish single “Only Wanna Be With You” from the band’s 1995 album Cracked Rear View became one of that year’s most popular songs, perhaps no one was more surprised than lead singer Darius Rucker.

During a talk at the College of Charleston, Rucker told the audience he didn’t like the song’s musical arrangement when he first heard it. “I told myself I was going to write the cheesiest lyrics I could so we’d never play it,” Rucker said. “It was funny to me because … that was one of our biggest hits.”

Rucker, along with Cary Ann Hearst ‘01 of the folk duo Shovels & Rope, visited the College on January 27, 2014, to discus songwriting. Their visit was presented by the Arts Management Program in the College’s School of the Arts.
