Summer, of course, is a time of escape. It’s when we all shut off our work computers, pack our bags and head out of town. And while we may do a lot of lounging on vacation, we also tend to catch up on our reading. Well, the summer 2014 issue of the award-winning College of Charleston Magazine will make for good company on the beach, at the pool or wherever you find yourself stretched out and ready to relax with a good read.

Here are four pieces you don’t want to skip over:

1. Expand your cultural horizons and learn some new words.

In this extraordinary photo essay by Leslie McKellar, six faculty members from the College’s School of Languages, Cultures, and World Affairs model their favorite foreign word and/or phrase that lacks an English equivalent. Trust us, these words in “Foreign Concept” will no longer be lost in translation.

2. See New Orleans through the lens of a true insider.

Rosemary Powell James ’59 proves that – at least when it comes to some things – it’s best to live the life unscripted. And as we see in this detailed portrait of this true Renaissance woman, Rosemary James has worn many hats – all of them an exceptional fit.

3. Defy the odds with an unlikely student and alum.

How many obstacles do you think one man can overcome? In the case of Trinidadian David Ramjohn ’04, it seems, countless. That’s what we discover in this profile of a man who never gave up on his college dreams.

4. Experience the life of a star.College of Charleston Magazine

When he was a student at the College, Orlando Jones was a veritable force on campus – a man of many talents and a guy that everyone knew and loved. That versatility and magnetic personality would prove invaluable as Jones made his way in Hollywood.

Of course, the rest of the magazine is bursting at the seams with amazing stories of faculty, student and alumni achievements, from a professor/alumni/donor team that discovered a new species of prehistoric whales, to a budding hip-hop fashion designer, to an accomplished playwright rewriting the theatre scene in Chicago.

And when you’re done with these pages, you might just be ready to get up from that beach towel, get back to work and go conquer the world.

(Note: This summer, College of Charleston Magazine received its third national CASE award in four years as well as a variety of regional and national writing awards. Congratulations to editor Mark Berry and his talented staff.)
