College of Charleston’s Nu Zeta Chapter of Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society, was recently named an “Honor Chapter” for the 4th consecutive year.
“Earning this national distinction for the 4th consecutive year is an impressive achievement and testimony to the dedication of our student members, especially our three officers who helped organize and execute our multiple activities last year,” says Mark P. Del Mastro, Chair of the Hispanic Studies at the College of Charleston . “What sets our chapter apart from the nearly 600 nationwide is our agenda of honor-society related activities that we carry out throughout the academic year. Whereas most honor society chapters simply hold an initiation ceremony of new members without any further activities, our Sigma Delta Pi chapter hosts poetry readings, faculty lecture series and the statewide S.C. Spanish Teacher of the Year program, among other events.
The College of Charleston chapter was one of only 12 of the nearly 600 chapters nationwide named “Honor Chapters” in 2014.
Nu Zeta Chapter of Sigma Delta Pi was installed on November 21, 1977. Nu Zeta has since remained very active not only with annual inductions of new members, but also with numerous national distinctions to include student winners of both Sigma Delta Pi’s national scholarship competition and the Gabriela Mistral Award.
Also, since July 1, 2010, the Department of Hispanic Studies at the College of Charleston is proud to be the location of the national headquarters of Sigma Delta Pi with Del Mastro serving as the Executive Director.
