Greg Fisher, director of the College of Charleston’s sailing program, competed against 106 boats at the Lightning North American Championship between August 9 and 15, 2014. Despite the rigorous sailing conditions, Fisher ultimately won the championship.
Fisher’s crew included his wife Jo Ann along with alumnus former College sailing team captain – and 2012 collegiate national champion – Zeke Horowitz ‘12.
“We are incredibly proud of Greg here at the Sailing Complex,” Jacob Raymond, director of education for the sailing program, said. “He is a superstar in the sailing world an we couldn’t be luckier to have him in our program.”
The crew emerged as champions over competitors including 16 world champions, 19 North American and National Champions, and three Olympians and Yachtsman/Yachtswoman of the Year.
This event marks Fisher’s second victory following his first in 1990. The win also qualifies the team for the World Championship, to be held in Canada in July 2015.
In addition to Fisher, alumni Ben Spector ’13, Jeff Aschieris ’13 and Sam Stokes ’12 also competed in the Championship. Their team secured a spot at the 2015 World Championship competition.
