In his address at the College of Charleston 2014 Winter Commencement ceremony today, Columbia Urban League President James McLawhorn, Jr. urged the over 350 graduates to stay positive.

“Persistence and perseverance enable you to stay on course through difficult and challenging times,” said McLawhorn. “ Many years ago, I learned that while spending time complaining and having a pity party, I was more productive and successful by using that time to focus on solutions.”

McLawhorn also told the graduates that their new degree is “the key that will open doors of opportunities and provide you with important problem solving skills that will be invaluable for ensuring your future success.”

South Carolina Lieutenant Governor John Yancy McGill was also given an honorary degree during today’s ceremony.

This winter commencement also marked the first graduation ceremony for new College of Charleston President Glenn McConnell. McConnell, a 1969 College of Charleston graduate, was named the College’s 22nd president earlier this year.
