Not one, not two, but three College of Charleston publications and stories are the best in the Southeast, 
according to CASE (Council for Advancement and Support of Education).
College of Charleston Magazine received the Grand Award in its category – beating out universities like Wake Forest and Duke.

“We greatly appreciate the CASE III judges recognizing College of Charleston Magazine with the Grand Award,” says Mark Berry, editor. “This high honor represents the collaborative effort of a lot of creative talent, from the magazine staff to the freelance photographers, illustrators and alumni writers that contribute to each issue. As our readers know, these many different voices come together to tell, both in word and image, the incredible story of the College’s faculty, students and alumni.”
“The Golden Hour,” a feature in the fall 2013 issue of College of Charleston Magazine, also earned a Grand Award. Written by Alicia Lutz ’98, the story details the heroism of alumna Alicia Shambo ’89.
“Alicia Shambo is a hero in the truest sense of the word,” Lutz explains. “The bravery and compassion she showed in the moments after the Boston Marathon bombing are instinctive to her – in the face of danger, she has this reflex to step in and do what she can. Saving lives is just what she does. Alicia’s story has a lot of heart, and the world is a better place with her in it.”
In 2013, College of Charleston Magazine was awarded a CASE Circle of Excellence Gold Award, signifying it was one of the best in the nation. It was also a finalist for CASE’s Robert Sibley Magazine of the Year Award.

The College’s employee newsletter, the Portico, took the Grand CASE Award in the newsletter category.
The Portico staff includes Lutz (editor), Holly Thorpe (art director), Leslie McKellar (photographer) and Jason Ryan (writer).
Lutz says, “It’s an honor to be recognized for our work. The Portico staff has a lot of talent – but it also has a lot of enthusiasm. We enjoy telling the stories of the people who call the College ‘work’ and strengthening the sense of community on campus. The College’s faculty and staff are made up of some pretty amazing people, and the Portico gives us the perfect opportunity to share that.”
