Democratic presidential candidate and former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley stopped by the College of Charleston on Oct. 22, 2015, for a town hall meeting – and some singing and guitar-playing – as part of the Department of Communication Bully Pulpit Series.

Politics aside, O’Malley garners special attention at the College because his daughter is an alumna. Tara O’Malley, the second-oldest of the candidate’s four children, graduated from the College in 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in international studies. According to her LinkedIn page, she is currently an administrative assistant at the United Nations Foundation in Washington D.C. She has also served internships at the White House and for former South Carolina congressional candidate Elizabeth Colbert-Busch, a CofC alum and sister of Late Show host Stephen Colbert.

Martin O’Malley, who served as mayor of Baltimore from 1999 to 2007 and as governor of Maryland from 2007 to 2015, made reference to his daughter during his remarks at the College.

“Did anybody go to school with my daughter Tara here?” O’Malley asked the audience. When no one replied, O’Malley quipped, “Just as I suspected – she never went to class.”
