Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week is a part of a national week of awareness organized by the National Coalition for the Homeless and the National Student Campaign against Hunger and Homelessness. Each year, more than 750 high schools, colleges, community based organizations and faith-based groups from across the country come together to bring awareness to hunger and homelessness.

At the College, this initiative is being managed by the Office of Sustainability and the Center for Civic Engagement. This year, Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week takes place Nov. 14-21, 2015. In partnership with other campus and community organizations (including College of Charleston Dining Services; the Office of Student Life, Keep Charleston Beautiful, the LowCountry Food Bank and Neighborhood House), the organizerrs are planning a number of programs including documentary screenings, philanthropic drives, social media campaigns, and service opportunities in the Charleston communitycreated to shed light on this pressing social issue.

On Tuesday, Nov. 17, a Clothing Drive and Swap will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Alumni Center in the School of Education Health and Human Performance (86 Wentworth St.). On Wednesday, Nov. 18, the documentary “A Place at the Table,” will be screened in the School of Sciences and Mathematics Building (room 129) from 6 to 8 p.m. And on Thursday, the Social Justice Coffee Hour (Alumni Center from 11 a.m. to noon) will feature a panel discussion on veterans experiencing homelessness. Guest speakers include Bradford Cashman, Director of Community Engagement at One80 Place, and Jessica McMahan, Veteran and Military Student Services Coordinator at the College.
