As the six month anniversary of the Emanuel A.M.E. Church shooting approaches, the College of Charleston, MUSC, the American Bar Association, and the American College of Physicians will sponsor a conversation focused on the gun violence crisis in South Carolina and our nation.

Flowers, notes and other gifts left at Emanuel A.M.E. Church in downtown Charleston honor nine shooting victims who perished in the church.

The program entitled “Moving from Crisis to Action: A Public Health Approach to Reducing Gun Violence” will be held on Dec. 4, 2015, from 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Emanuel A.M.E. Church in downtown Charleston at 100 Calhoun St.   Dozens of national and local public health professionals, faith leaders, legal experts and others will engage in informative panel discussions to address the issue of gun violence and prevention policies.

Participants will have the opportunity to join others in the community to answer the call to help Charleston and South Carolina move from crisis and bloodshed to action and healing. A keynote adddress will be delivered at 9:40 a.m. by Daniel Webster from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health’s Center for Gun Policy and Research. At 10:10 a.m.  Ron Sullivan, who directs the Criminal Justice Institute at Harvard Law School, will address the audience.

    Facing the Facts: How Gun Violence is Shaping Life in America

    How the Faith Community Can Lead the Way on Educating about Gun Risks

    Saving Lives by Keeping Guns from High Risk People

    Easy Methods for Reducing Preventable Gun Deaths and Injuries to Children

    How Safer Communities and the Second Amendment Can Coexist

After the panel discussions, participants will talk about ways to identify opportunities for action and ways to inspire change in the Lowcountry.

The program will end with an ecumenical service beginning at 6 pm at the church.
