While most of the College’s senior class was walking across the stage in white jackets and white dresses on Mother’s Day Weekend 2016, a number of senior athletes were on the road, opting to finish their seasons in place of attending commencement ceremonies.

Among those athletes were baseball players Eric Bauer ’16, Nathan Helvey ’16, Alex Pastorius ’16, and Morgan Phillips ’16, who took a road trip up the coast to battle the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

Two weeks later, on May 21, 2016, these players celebrated Senior Day at Patriots Point Athletics Complex during the season finale against William & Mary, with family and friends joining the athletes on the field to cheer their successful careers at the College. As a surprise bonus, Provost Brian McGee was on hand in full academic regalia to present the senior baseball players with their diplomas.

“I always want our graduates to have their hard work properly recognized,” says McGee. “We love our traditions at the College of Charleston, and there is no grander tradition for us than commencement.  These student-athletes sacrificed a great deal during their time at the College, and I was happy to bring commencement to them on a beautiful day at Patriots Point.”
