The institute, sponsored in part by the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators Region III and the Southern Association for College Student Affairs, helps young professionals as they navigate student-focused careers in higher education. Beyond Caudill, College employees Bucky Buchanan ’08 (Campus Recreation Services), Lauren Sottile (Counseling and Substance Abuse Services), and Dylan Mazelis ’15 (Higdon Student Leadership Center) are attending the week-long institute, with Mazelis serving as an intern for the New Professionals Institute. In total, more than 70 participants representing 66 institutions and every state in the Southeast will attend the conference.

Caudill says she looks forward to the institute providing a shared learning experience for both participants and facilitators like herself.

“The focus of the institute is to help new professionals working in student affairs and in higher education think about their future goals, understand the ins and outs of higher education and student affairs, and to develop skills that will help them advance professionally in their work,” says Caudill. “Additionally, the institute creates the opportunity for participants to network with other participants and develop long-term mentoring relationships with the facilitators.”

Caudill, who began her position at the College in July 2015, also serves as an adjunct professor. She believes the College’s presence at the New Professionals Institute provides benefits that extend far beyond the gathering in Texas.

“Having our new professionals gain experiences like these enhances our work and service to our students,” Caudill says. “Having such great representation from CofC also helps build our reputation in our region and in the country.”
