The College of Charleston has established the Lucy Garrett Beckham Memorial Scholarship in honor of the CofC alumna and beloved former principal of Mount Pleasant’s Wando High School who passed away in December 2015.

Established in partnership with friends of Lucy Garrett Beckham, the scholarship celebrates Beckham’s lifetime commitment to education, teaching and leading. This scholarship will help support Wando High School graduates majoring in teacher education with a focus on math at the College of Charleston.

“Students were at the heart of everything Lucy did,” said Dean Frances C. Welch, dean of the School of Education, Health, and Human Performance. “The truest legacy to her memory will be to carry on her deep commitment to education by building teachers who can continue her vision.”

Although she is widely known for her tenure at Wando, Beckham is also a 1970 College of Charleston graduate and was named the 2010 Alumna of the Year. In addition to her many accolades, she has likely been a positive influence on more students, teachers and community members than any other person in the state of South Carolina.

As part of the fundraising initiative, The College of Charleston School of Education Health and Human Performance and Wando High School invite the public to come support both the Lucy Beckham Memorial Scholarship and the Wando football team by attending the home football game against Summerville High School at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 4, 2016. The evening game will provide an opportunity to directly donate to the Lucy Garrett Beckham Memorial Scholarship.

The goal is to raise $50,000 by Dec. 13, 2016, which has been designated Lucy Beckham Day by the Town of Mount Pleasant in honor of the anniversary of her death.

Donations are tax-deductible and can be made online at http://giving.cofc.edu/beckham-memorial-scholarship. Checks should be made payable to the College of Charleston Foundation (Lucy Garrett Beckham Scholarship) and mailed to: School of Education, Health and Human Performance, 86 Wentworth St., Charleston, SC 29424.
