Dozens of College of Charleston students are taking a hands-on approach to protecting the Charleston environment.
Students from the College of Charleston Biology Club, the Alliance for Planet Earth and Keep Charleston Beautiful will take part in a beach cleanup on Dec. 3, 2016. The students will be picking up trash and other debris from 10 a.m. until noon at the Harbor Walk Pocket Beach located adjacent to the College’s Harbor Walk Campus.
Ocean debris continues to be a mounting problem around the world. According to recent report by The National Geographic, there are 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic debris in the ocean. Of that mass, 269,000 tons float on the surface, while some four billion plastic microfibers per square kilometer litter the deep sea.
Trash in the ocean kills more than one million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals and turtles each year through ingestion and entanglement.
