The College of Charleston will present the 2017 Albert Simons Medal of Excellence to critically acclaimed architect Peter Pennoyer later this week.

Peter Pennoyer

Pennoyer is the principal of Peter Pennoyer Architects, an award-winning New York-based firm that practices traditional and classical architecture for residential, commercial and institutional clients worldwide. He is a member of Architectural Digest’s AD100, a trustee of the Morgan Library & Museum, President of the Whiting Foundation, and coauthor, with Anne Walker, of four books on twentieth-century American architectural practices.

Pennoyer also has served as chairman and board member of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art and in 2014 he was elected to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects.

The Albert Simons Medal of Excellence is awarded by the College of Charleston each year to honor individuals who have excelled in civic design, traditional architectural design, historic preservation, and/or urban planning.

The award is named after Albert Simons, who spent his sixty-year career as an architect and preservationist in Charleston and played a key role in the Charleston Renaissance. As a professor at the College of Charleston for over 20 years, Simons is also credited for starting the College’s School of the Arts.

The Albert Simons Medal of Excellence Award Ceremony will be in the Simons Recital Hall at 6p.m. with a reception to follow at the Hill Gallery.
