Student-faculty research is big at the College of Charleston. And one of the best ways to understand that is to attend the Celebration of Summer Scholars at 3 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 25, 2017, in Addlestone Library.

Eighty-five undergraduate students from the College – along with eight local high school students – will present posters of their summer research or creative projects. Among those on display will be psychology major Kathryn Johnson’s study of the changes in curiosity relative to age. Kevin Walsh, a chemistry and biochemistry double major, will present “Molecular Dynamics Analysis of Protein HBx in Hepatitis B.” And studio art major William Burke, who worked with sculpture professor Jarod Charzewski, will present “Folkloric Sculpture through Kinetics.”

According to Elizabeth Meyer-Bernstein, Associate Dean of the Honors College and Director of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities, “This poster session not only celebrates the outstanding scholarship of our students and faculty, but also provides an invaluable professional development opportunity for the students as they present the summer projects to their peers, faculty and the public.”

Bernstein says she hopes the event will increase the visibility of undergraduate research and creative activities at the College.

“We also hope it will inspire faculty to engage with students outside of the classroom, and expose students to the breadth of opportunities for exciting research and creative projects on campus,” she says.
