Want to study music appreciation without getting off the couch? Or learn about microeconomics from your kitchen table?

At the College of Charleston, you can do that – and study many more subjects – without even leaving the house, thanks to online learning.

According to the Chronicle of Higher Education, 30 percent of all college students in the U.S. have taken or are taking a course online. At the College, more than 80 courses are being offered digitally during the fall semester this year.

Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Brian McGee says the College has a long history of offering distance-learning opportunities.

“The College of Charleston began offering correspondence courses nearly a century ago, and today’s online courses are vital to the success of our students,” McGee explains. “For many students, the flexibility of online learning allows them to complete more courses and graduate more quickly.”

He adds, “The College has offered online learning for nearly eight years. Almost half our summer courses are now offered online.”

McGee noted that these courses are carefully designed to cover the same content and have the same high-quality instruction as the College’s more traditional course sections.

Here’s a brief overview of some of the more diverse courses that are being offered online this fall at the College:

Let’s start with DANC 150 Dance Appreciation. That’s right. You can study dance online. The Department of Theatre and Dance is offering three sections of the course this semester and all three are fully subscribed. Taught by Erin Leigh Butcheck and Leslie Ann Jones, this course is designed for non-majors and investigates dance as a culturally significant art form. The curriculum will examine evolution of dance through historical and aesthetic perspectives. But you will have to get out of the house because attendance at a few performances is required.

The Department of Health and Human Performance offers EXSC 350 Kinesiology online. In this course, you’ll learn about the techniques of human motion analysis. Particular emphasis is placed on the anatomical, mechanical and physical principles of motion analysis. (There are a couple of prerequisite courses you’ll need to take before you enroll.)

Among the online offerings from the Department of Political Science is GEOG 219 Reading the Lowcountry Landscape. This course will help students develop geographic skills through a critical analysis of the South Carolina Lowcountry. The curriculum will also examine the environmental, political, cultural and economic processes that have helped shape this region.

The Department of Management of Marketing is offering INTB 322 International Business, a course that explores the environment and operations of international business with an emphasis on the nature and scope of this field regarding international trade, the nation-state and the management of multinational enterprises. (Several pre-requisite courses must be tackled before enrolling.)

You can also enroll in CSCI 110 Computer Fluency. Offered by the Department of Computer Science, this course is a broad introduction to the world of computing that provides students with the ability to understand and use emerging technology effectively. Relevant topics include how computers work, the ubiquity of computing, applications and operating systems software, cloud computing as well as the Internet and networks.

And, if exploring languages is your thing, you can opt to enroll in CLAS 111 Medical Terminology in Greek and LatinFREN 201 Intermediate FrenchHNDI 201D Intermediate Hindi, or SPAN 313 Spanish Composition. All of those and more are offered by the School of Languages, Cultures and World Affairs.
