Job title: Executive Director of Community Relations and Ombudsperson

How long have you worked at the College? 15 years

What are your job responsibilities? As director of community relations, I represent the College within the greater Charleston community as a member of various community organizations and boards, and manage two amazing employees who provide assistance and outreach to many people on and off campus. I provide support for family and friends after the death of a current student, faculty member or staff member.

As ombudsperson, I support members of the campus community by providing a confidential and safe place to discuss anything they are unhappy or uncomfortable about and provide options that can help empower them and/or assist them in finding solutions for problems and situations. The role of ombudsperson is guided by four ethical principles: confidentiality, independence, impartial and neutral, and informal.

What do you like most about your job? I love everything about my job, no two days are alike. I love working with our students, staff and faculty. It is truly a gift to love what you do, and I am blessed to be in this place.

What question do you get asked most in your job and what’s your typical answer? Do you have a few minutes to talk? And my answer is yes.

What’s your favorite location on campus and why? The Cistern Yard, watching students enter at Convocation and exit at Commencement. It is a magical place.

Finish this sentence: “The College should…” Continue to show sincere admiration for its people.

What are your hobbies? I am an avid stepper, walking over 100,000 steps a week. I love to read, am an unconditional Buffalo Bills football fan, and love the positive energy of our entire athletic department and watching our men’s basketball team play. I wish I had the time to support all of our teams.

What personal and/or professional accomplishment are you most proud of? It would be easier for me to discuss my pride in the accomplishments of others.

Name a creative work (book, movie, performance, etc.) you enjoyed recently and why? I found this past College Reads! Book – The Hate You Give by Angie Thomas, thought-provoking, powerful and extremely important.

What was your favorite TV show growing up? Anything that contained music and dancing.

What’s next on your bucket list? To go to a live storage unit auction.

What is something your campus colleagues would be surprised to know about you? That I love Sci-Fi movies. I have watched all of the Jurassic Park movies multiple times and could watch them all in a marathon tonight!

What was your first job? I worked as a bartender while I was an undergraduate.

What’s your favorite Lowcountry restaurant? I have so many – Mondo’s on James Island, Hall’s Chophouse and Fleet Landing in downtown Charleston, and Rita’s on Folly Beach.

Describe your perfect day: Meeting with students, making someone feel like they are not alone during a bad time, having lunch with friends, walking 15,000 steps and watching American Pickers on the History Channel at night.
