The Power of Words event will be held on Thursday, Oct. 25, 2018, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Rita Liddy Hollings Science Center Auditorium, room 101.

This educational workshop explores how language discrimination affects the College of Charleston campus and greater Charleston communities. It will explain how language and social justice intersect in marginalizing minoritized groups of people. The keynote speaker is Ana Celia Zentella, renowned linguist and former professor at UC San Diego and The City University of New York. The event, which also includes a lecture panel discussion, is open to all CofC students, faculty, and the Charleston community.

The Power of Words is co-sponsored by the Sustainability Literacy Institute, Honors College, Jewish Student Union, Hispanic Studies, Gender and Sexuality Equity Center, Linguistics Studies, Office of Institutional Diversity, and Women’s and Gender Studies. It is also funded by a Sustainability Literacy Institute MiniGrant. For more information contact student event organizer Danya Firestone at firestonedj@g.cofc.edu.
