College of Charleston alumna Carol Hannah Whitfield ’08 will appear on tonight’s season premier of “Project Runway Season 6.” The episode will air on Lifetime TV at 10:00 p.m. Whitfield was a studio art major at the College and very focused on design even then.
Studio Art professor Sara Frankel had Whitfield for six classes and said, “She was just such a great student, she really was sweet, but determined and focused and she took criticism very well, which will help her on ‘Project Runway.'”
Frankel remembers an independent study that she supervised for Whitfield based on fashion design and drawing as well as the history of fashion. “We worked on the figure,” Frankel said. “The figure is a really difficult subject, so we worked on proportion, gesture and anatomy. When I talked with her over e-mail recently, she thanked me for making my students do so many 30-second and one-minute drawing because that is now how she starts her design process.”
Frankel says many students in studio art are like Whitfield – they don’t necessarily plan to be an artist, but that is what makes the College of Charleston program special.”We’re housed in the context of a liberal arts education, so we work with students who take away from a drawing class something else.”
