Several programs at the College of Charleston have new leadership for the spring 2010 semester.
Dr. Tim Callahan has been promoted to director of the M.S. in Environmental Studies program at the College of Charleston. Dr. Callahan joined the College in 2001 after earning his Ph.D. in Earth and Environmental Sciences (with Dissertation in Hydrology) at New Mexico Tech, one of the top five U.S. graduate programs in hydrology. While studying for the Ph.D., he was employed as a Research Assistant at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico and worked on site assessment of groundwater resources at Yucca Mountain, Nevada. Dr. Callahan has been granted over $400,000 in external funding for local, state, and national-level research projects. He has published several papers on groundwater pollution, the hydrology of Carolina Bays and other freshwater depression wetlands, and watershed hydrology in the Coastal Plain region.
Dr. Jason Coy has been promoted to director of the M.A. in History program. A specialist in the history of Renaissance and Reformation Europe, Dr. Coy received his doctorate from the University of California, Los Angeles in 2001 and joined the faculty of the College of Charleston in 2003. Professor Coy is the author of Strangers and Misfits: Banishment, Social Control, and Authority in Early Modern Germany (Leiden, 2008), an examination of criminality and authority in Reformation-era Germany. A book on symbolic performance, communication, and power relations in the Holy Roman Empire during the early modern period that he co-edited, entitled The Holy Roman Empire, Reconsidered, is forthcoming and will be the inaugural volume in a new book series sponsored by the German Studies Association. Dr. Coy has many plans for the M.A. in History program including: strengthening the relationships with local historical sites, societies, and archives to provide opportunities for students and graduates; working with the Carolina Lowcountry and Atlantic World (CLAW) program to enhance offerings in the history of this region and to accentuate Charleston’s historical connections to the Atlantic World; and forming partnerships with other departments and programs on campus to allow the College to offer a graduate certification in African American Studies.
