The College of Charleston is one of more than 600 universities participating in the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) and the Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (FSSE). All freshmen and seniors will receive an invitation to complete a survey beginning February 1. Follow up reminders to complete the survey will be sent throughout the months of February and March. The faculty survey will kick off in March.

The focus of the NSSE survey is to gather information about student participation in programs and activities that institutions offer that promote student learning and personal development and the results provide an estimate of how undergraduates spend their time and what they gain from attending college. NSSE creates five institutional benchmarks in the following categories: level of academic challenge, active and collaborative learning, student-faculty interaction, enriching educational experiences, supportive campus environment.

The FSSE provides information about the importance that faculty place on various areas of learning and development, the nature and frequency of faculty-student interactions, and how faculty members organize their time, both in and out of the classroom.

According to Dr. Karin Roof, “this will be the third iteration of the NSSE survey for the College of Charleston and we are particularly excited about the timing of this survey given the institution’s new strategic plan. This year also marks the first time the college has participated in the faculty version of the survey, the FSSE, which will allow the institution to draw parallels between student responses and those of the faculty.”

Surveys need to be completed by April 2 and student participants are eligible to win gift cards from Amazon.com, Market 159, Java City and a Cougar Pride pack. Results from the survey will be available on the Office of Accountability, Accreditation, Planning, & Assessment website.
