Miscellany, the College of Charleston’s student literary magazine, is the only magazine in the southeast to win a crown award from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. More than 1,500 collegiate publications were eligible to enter the prestigious competition and Miscellany received a Collegiate Magazine Silver Crown.
“When the students are recognized by the premiere national press association in the nation as producing a magazine that rates among the best, it’s a special year,” says Miscellany advisor Carol Ann Davis. “All the credit goes to the student editors, and to the students on campus producing literary and artistic work of the highest quality—it turns out—in the nation! It’s very exciting, especially in a year when the founder of the magazine, Professor Paul Allen, retires after over 30 years of distinguished teaching and advising of creative writing students.”
Publications were judged at Columbia University based on writing/editing, design, content, concept, photography, art and graphics. Gold Crowns have been presented annually since 1982 and Silver Crowns have been given since 1984. The SCPA is an international student press association uniting student journalists and faculty advisers at schools and colleges through educational conferences, idea exchanges and award programs.
Miscellany is an annual publication of poetry, prose and visual art. It is staffed by College of Charleston students with several faculty advisors offering guidance through their experience.
