S.C. research colleges to share $6.4 million

Research programs in South Carolina will receive a $6.4 million boost from federal grants, U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham announced Monday.

The University of South Carolina Research Foundation, the Medical University of South Carolina, the College of Charleston, Coastal Carolina University and Clemson University will receive a combined $6.4 million from the National Science Foundation, the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Education, according to Graham, R-S.C.

The College of Charleston will get $196,924.

Research topics include genes, nanomaterials, fluorescence bioimaging and cadiovascular tissue engineering in diabetes (Clemson); sulfur and iron metabolism (Coastal Carolina); targeted annotation and exploration of synteny of immunoglobulin loci (College of Charleston); fluorometric imaging plate reading, the role and regulation of protein kinase C isoenzymes, gap junctional patterning in arrhythic heart (MUSC); and de novo peptide sequencing and solid oxide fuel cells (USC Research Foundation).
